Carols by Candlelight – Sunday Dec 4th (5pm)

Join us on December 4th for Carols by Candlelight with mulled wine and mince pies in the Triangle (between Horniman Drive and Rocombe Crescent). Six talented members who sing in choirs have volunteered to help out by leading the singing, and carol sheets will be available so we can all join in! We may even do a walkabout on nearby roads for those not able to get to the Triangle.

This will take place on Sunday 4 December at 5pm in the Triangle between Horniman Drive and Rocombe Crescent. So do come along and, if you can, bring a lantern or candle in a jar to light our way. We should love to have some musicians and more singers, but don’t worry if singing is not your forte! If you enjoy singing, can play an instrument to accompany the carols and other seasonal songs, and would like to join the small group before the evening, do let Bea Jackson know by calling her on 020 8699 7143.

Save the dates (Oct 8th and Dec 4th)

Sadly, it has proved impossible to secure insurance cover for our annual non-commercial firework event due to changes in the insurance market. So the Association has had to accept that we can no longer hold the annual fireworks event which is a great shame given its popularity over recent years.

However, TLERA are planning two new events – please save the date for these – more details will follow soon – look at for further information coming through your letterbox.

Autumn Harvest Event – Saturday 8th October 1 – 4 pm (venue tbc)

Carols by Candlelight – Sunday 4th December in the triangle with mulled wine and snacks (afternoon – exact time tbc)

20mph – The good, the bad and the ugly!

THE GOOD: After much pressure from campaigners, Lewisham Council has finally agreed to introduce 20mph zones throughout the borough. Hoorah! This is fantastic news and will hopefully go some way in helping to make our streets safer. Surrounding Southwark streets are all now 20mph so it only makes sense to unify the area.

20mph

THE BAD: This is, however, just one step in a long list of safety measures we are urging the Council to implement in order to make the local streets safer. Despite engineers visiting the site last summer, being shocked at the potential traffic dangers and making promises for immediate action, still nothing has been done.

THE UGLY: Rat-running and reckless driving on Canonbie Road and Westwood Park are reaching alarming proportions: on Monday 9th February, 240 vehicles were recorded between 7.30am and 8.30am. This is a highly dangerous volume of traffic for what should be quiet residential streets. Smart Sat Navs (designed to find shortcuts) are the biggest part of the problem, leading vehicles along Canonbie Road away from the South Circular and nearby junctions. Roads on the Estate are now considerably more dangerous than they have ever been due to this increased volume of traffic. Many heavy commercial vehicles ‘shudder’ up and down the roads every day, causing vibrations that have been shown to damage foundations and structures of adjacent properties.

We need to act now before the situation gets out of hand and what is now a temporary solution becomes a permanent one. We are continuing with our campaign to urge the Council to do something about this before there is a tragic accident.

Please help us to stop this madness!

Garden Opening 2014

Our NGS Garden Opening on 31st May and 1st June was a huge success. The sun shone, 338 adult visitors plus lots of children came to see the gardens, many of whom were very tempted by the wonderful array of homemade cakes on offer. The same four gardens opened in 2013. This year they raised just over £3511, more than a 50% increase on last year! And the 50% increase was reflected in the amount we raised for the tea and cakes – our highest amount ever. So our thanks to all who the members who baked cakes, donated plants, and helped out at the event.

A new member also opened her garden for the first time on 13th July, raising over £700 – a fantastic result. All the money raised will go to the mainly cancer and caring charities supported by the National Garden Scheme.
